Architecture changes and is shaped by history. The style of homes are typically shaped by geographical location, historical events and culture.
One of the things I enjoyed doing was admiring the beautiful homes when I used to freelance. I currently do not own a home, but plan to own one in the future. It would give me great pleasure to decorate my entire home. Of all the different home styles, these are the four different styles of house that I find to be stunning — in no particular order.
Contemporary
These types of homes reflect the current architecture and is constantly evolving to reflect the times. It was built in the middle of the 20th century and into the 21st century. Contemporary styles have no specific design or dominating aesthetic because it changes to stay within the present.
Plantation Style
Plantation style homes are very grandiose deriving from the American Southern style of living and well-known for its presence during slavery. This style of home is boxy with tall ceilings and porches that wrap around the entire home. A eye-catching aesthetic of this type of home is the Greek style columns; another is the high windows meant to tackle the humid temperatures of the original geographical location where the home originated. The interior features open floor-plans and sweeping staircases to further highlight the regal feeling it induces to encapsulate the economic advancements of that time.
Cottage
This style of home prioritizes comfort and coziness with it originally being built in rural areas. Cottages were of the Medieval period and were inhabited by an agricultural laborer of that time. The historical aesthetic features thatched roofs with the house having a small footprint. Modern style of this home is built with natural materials, cozy interiors, and lush landscaping that encapsulates the entire exterior of the home.
Spanish Revival
In the 17th century, Spanish colonial missionaries travelled to the Americas and built homes that were reminiscent of their native homeland’s with local materials, such as clay and adobe. Defining characteristics of this style of home is the distinct red clay roof, white or light colored stucco walls, un-framed round arched doorways and exposed exterior features. The interior has an asymmetrical floor plan that usually connects to a courtyard-like landscaping.
